News roundup for Monday, Oct. 12
Gov. Corzine today signed the EnCap Reform Bill into law and many environmentalists grimaced; in a press release, Jeff Tittel called the bill a sham and accused the governor of siding with special interests over public interests. Developers have criticized the bill, but for different reasons — they thought it was too strict.
The Star-Ledger this weekend endorsed Chris Daggett, who has been doing consistently better in polls but still lagging behind, in the race for governor.
The EPA said last week that New Jersey has some of the worst air in the country, and in 13 counties, long-term exposure can worsen asthma, trigger heart attacks and result in death. The cause: power plants, factories, trucks and cars.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Friday cited the ConocoPhillips Bayway oil refinery in Linden for alleged workplace safety and health violations.
Residents of Montclair, Glen Ridge and Bloomfield will be able to hop a train to New York City on weekends starting Nov. 8. South Jersey transit projects under way include the planned Pennsauken Transit Center.
The new 15-member state Environmental Justice Council, formed to address pollution in urban areas, had its first meeting last week in Trenton.

Yet another reason why Gov. Corzine has failed to receive a single environmental group’s endorsement this year. From an environmentalist perspective, supporting Chris Daggett is clearly the way to go in this race.
That’s why The Star Ledger’s endorsement of Chris Daggett is great news. I wish the Republicans would stop the Bush/Rove Fear mongering. There is obviously a consensus that a vote for Daggett is not a vote for Corzine.
Daggett is a viable candidate and there are many of this who are voting for him because we know he can win and is the only candidate who can change this state. The Star Ledger’s endorsement echoes and re-affirms that opinion.
We need people to get involved and spread the word about Chris Daggett. http://njelection.wordpress.com/2009/10/12/bloggers-needed-to-spread-the-word-ledger-endorses-daggett%e2%80%8f/
