Christopher Daggett, head of the state Department of Environmental Protection under Gov. Kean and an EPA regional administrator under President Reagan, is expected to announce his run for governor as an independent today.

Environmental groups argued last week for replenishment of the Garden State Preservation Trust, the open-space fund whose future is in doubt. The state Senate Environmental and Assembly Environment and Solid Waste committees held a joint public meeting Thursday to help decide the trust’s future and map out future preservation efforts. In his testimony, Agriculture Secretary Douglas Fisher said the state should double the amount of farmland it has preserved so far.

The EPA on Friday declared that greenhouse gases endanger public health, laying the groundwork for regulating them under federal laws.

Brush fires struck Ridgewood, Alpine and other North Jersey towns this weekend. The Alpine fire continues to burn this morning, according to the Record.

Volunteers cleaned up Poricy Park in Middletown this weekend in honor of Earth Day, which is Wednesday.
