Tonight, kill the lights for Earth Hour
The large-scale lights-off effort known as Earth Hour takes place tonight from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
In New York, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, the Chrysler Building, the United Nations headquarters and Broadway theaters all are scheduled to power down. In West Orange, lights in Thomas Edison’s original laboratory will go off.
They will join landmarks around the world — the Acropololis in Greece, the Great Pyramids in Egypt, the Eiffel Tower and numerous others — in this symbolic effort by the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness of climate change.
More than 2,000 New Jersey residents have signed on to participate, as have dozens of schools and municipalities.
