N.J. Legislature to hear toxic cleanup plan today

Today, the New Jersey Senate and Assembly are scheduled to consider leigislation that would speed toxic site cleanups.

“The current system for site remediation is deeply flawed, as demonstrated by the massive backlogs, long bureaucratic delays and the lack of screening of consultants that work on site remediation,” Assemblyman John McKeon, sponsor of the measure and chair of the Assembly Environment and Solid Waste Committee, said in a press statement.

The new system would allow independent environmental professionals to perform many of the state’s cleanups, and establish a 13-member board to certify them and approve their work.
