Plan unveiled for ‘green-collar’ jobs

Gov. Corzine yesterday unveiled plans to train 300 to 400 people for new so-called green jobs this year.

Natural gas company New Jersey Resources will support the program with a $300,000 grant from its Conserve to Preserve Foundation.

“We believe programs like this will play an important role in advancing New Jersey’s economic recovery, as well as its environmental goals, and ensuring it remains a great place to live and work,” Laurence Downes, the chairman and CEO of New Jersey Resources, said in a statement.

Corzine spoke yesterday at Isles Inc. in Trenton, a nonprofit community development and environmental organization.

Green jobs include services such as energy auditing, attaching solar panels to buildings and retrofitting buildings to increase their efficiency.

The state estimates the jobs will pay $15 per hour, a tough wage to live on in New Jersey.
