Town doesn’t want in on Superfund settlement
Chester Township isn’t planning to join a settlement deal to pay for cleanup of the Combe Fill South Landfill, the Star-Ledger reported today.
The landfill exists partly in Chester and partly in Washington Township, and Chester doesn’t like the fact that after paying some $120,000 in legal fees over the years, it would have to shell out still more under a deal announced Tuesday.
The deal charged about 300 defendants, according to the Star-Ledger, with millions of dollars in cleanup costs past and present. The defendants include dozens of North Jersey municipalities — and basically any other entity that’s dumped trash at the site over the years, which includes some major companies. The landfill was a dumping site for municipalities and area corporations from the 1940s to 1981.
The Star-Ledger says federal and state authorities originally sued two entities (the primary defendants), and then they in turn sued the others.
The settlement is one of the largest ever involving a Superfund site in New Jersey, according to the Ledger.
