Another pedestrian hit by car

A woman was struck by a car Tuesday evening in Montclair, Baristanet reports.

It’s the second accident in town involving a pedestrian in less than two weeks. Last week, two women were hit, and one died from her injuries. She was 80.

This is Montclair, home to the summertime Cops in Crosswalks sting operation, which resulted in more than 800 tickets issued to drivers who blew through crosswalks. That should have raised some awareness about pedestrians and their crazy habits of walking around to get places. Maybe it did. That makes us wonder about pedestrian safety in other Jersey towns.

Last year, 162 pedestrians and cyclists died in traffic-related deaths in New Jersey, according to the Tri-State Transportation Committee. The number was down 9 percent from the year before, but it consistently exceeds the national average and is still way too high.

The committee says state funding is a big part of the problem.

Gov. Corzine in 2006 launched the Pedestrian Safe Corridor Program, a five-year $74 million statewide pedestrian safety program and results are visible, the committee says. But more New Jerseyans are commuting on foot (26 percent more, between 2000 and 2006) and more could be done to protect them.
