Weekend news roundup

Rutgers last week got a federal grant to steer dry cleaners away from Perchloroethylene, or perc, which is still used at an estimated 1,600 dry cleaners in New Jersey… despite its known harmfulness.

You can go to the park, just not the park office: Many state park offices will be closed on weekends from now until April 1.

Fewer people — even here in New Jersey — are tearing down homes to build new ones lately.

Eleven months after being ordered to do so by the state DEP, Ridgefield is readying to award a contract for a salt shed it needs to build — but it needs more money, so it’s holding a public hearing tomorrow. (The DEP wants the borough build a shed so rock salt doesn’t leach into Meadowlands marshes.)

Highlands towns are nearing a Dec. 31 deadline set by the state Council on Affordable Housing — they must show how they’ll reach their low- and moderate-income housing requirements by then or get an extension.

And, as highlighted on the EnviroPolitics blog: New Jersey Future’s recent article on the Hudson Bergen Rail Line’s steady growth in ridership and contribution to a housing boom.
