The number of people who commuted by train in New Jersey in ‘05: 9.1 million, according to a recent U.S. Department of Transportation study.

The only states with more ferry riders were New York, Washington and California.

The number includes people who rode to work and took seasonal ferries or tours.

Ridership on two commuter ferries — NY Waterway and SeaStreak — was down about 2 percent in July, because of the economic downturn and job cuts on Wall Street, according to both companies.
