Group cites risks of offshore LNGs

Clean Ocean Action yesterday said liquefied natural gas terminals proposed for the Jersey coast are unnecessary and a danger.

At a press conference in Trenton, the group said the terminals would endanger a fragile marine habitat, threaten fishing and tourism and be a terrorist target… and would not be terribly helpful to New Jerseyans.

LNG terminals have been proposed 19 miles off Sea Bright, 20 miles east of Manasquan and 15 miles off Asbury Park.

At the moment, there are only two offshore LNG facilities in the country, according to the Star-Ledger — one off the coast of Boston, the other 116 miles off Louisiana. This spring, an LNG facility proposed for the Long Island Sound was rejected.
