Corzine still says “no” to oil drilling off Jersey coast

Barack Obama has changed his position on offshore oil drilling, saying he might be willing to accept limited drilling… if it were part of a comprehensive energy plan that included renewable energy and other things everyone likes.

Gov. Corzine, meanwhile, hasn’t budged. On WOR radio today, he said no to drilling off the Atlantic coast, saying the risk to New Jersey tourism was too high, and potential payoff too low, to warrant exploration.

Corzine also said it makes more sense to consider drilling in the Gulf. Which is far away. And, of course, has proven oil reserves.

A majority of New Jerseyans now support drilling for oil off the Jersey Shore, according to a Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll released earlier this week. Fifty-six percent of people support drilling for oil or natural gas off the Jersey Shore, while 36 percent said no.
