Farming in Newark

Brick City Urban Farms is working a plot of land at Spruce and Washington streets in Newark. The nonprofit’s aim: To give Newarkers good-quality, locally-grown produce at affordable prices.

The farm is a prototype “SPIN farm” — otherwise known as Small Plot INtensive farming. Its founders plan to donate some of the food and sell some of it to local farmers markets and restaurants. They also will develop a co-op program, offering people a chance to buy shares of its bounty — tomatoes, corn, hot peppers, sweet peppers, squash, cucumber, zucchini, eggplant, lettuce, chard, beans, pumpkins, okra, basil, oregano, and parsley… and maybe more.

The group plans to start a rooftop farm at the top of 90 South Street in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood next.

Yesterday, the Daily Newarker had a podcast of interviews with some of the project’s creators.
