Highlands Master Plan a go

The Highlands Regional Master Plan passed today. If Gov. Corzine green-lights it, the document will shape what happens in the 850,000-plus acre region — a critically important water source — in the years to come.

The Highlands Council was split on the plan, voting 9 to 5 to adopt it in a meeting that lasted more than seven hours. Amendments that were backed by environmentalists got mostly scrapped or weakened, according to the Star-Ledger, leaving many disappointed.

The region provides water to more than 5 million New Jerseyans. The Highlands Act was created four years ago to address the fact that heavy development was threatening the land, which spans seven counties, and to protect the water supply. The master plan was to be the blueprint that outlined how it would be done. Now the ball is in Corzine’s court.
