Another LNG proposal in the works?

Canadian Superior Energy (or an affiliate) was to announce today that it plans to apply to build a Liquefied Natural Gas terminal off the coast of New Jersey, according to NJ Biz:

Calgary, Alberta-based Canadian Superior’s scheduled announcement comes about a month after trade journals reported that CEO Craig Mackenzie said the company was exploring the construction of an LNG terminal “in the New York City metropolitan area.” In January, Canadian Superior said it had made a large natural gas find in Trinidad.

In April, the U.S. Supreme Court put a temporary halt to plans by British energy company BP to build a massive LNG terminal in Logan Township on the New Jersey side of the Delaware River. The ruling came in a court battle initiated by the state of Delaware.

Canadian Superior’s proposed facility may have to share ocean with two other LNG proposals still on the table: one from Atlantic Sea Island Group, a private investment firm, and another from ExxonMobil. ExxonMobil dubbed the floating terminal it hopes to build 20 miles from Manasquan “BlueOcean Energy”; Atlantic Sea Island Group proposed a small island for an LNG terminal and industrial complex 19 miles from Sea Bright called “Safe Harbor Energy.”

Another energy company, Broadwater, was shot down by New York in its effort to build an LNG terminal in the Long Island Sound last month, after receiving federal approval. The company is appealing to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Meanwhile, an LNG facility off the coast of Massachusetts began operating today. The facility is the first on the East Coast in more than 30 years.
