Federal gas tax break isn’t governor’s “favorite”

The federal gas tax break endorsed by Hillary Clinton and John McCain isn’t Gov. Corzine’s “favorite idea.”
Corzine said as much on CNBC yesterday, then issued a statement refuting reports that he supports the summer tax break, which Clinton has been pushing.
Clinton had suggested making up for lost gas tax revenue with a windfall profits tax on oil companies, and Corzine said he thought it was “very unlikely you could get a windfall profits tax through Congress in a year, let alone between now and May 31st.” He also called the gas tax holiday a “distraction,” but said Clinton’s windfall profits tax would extend indefinitely, providing resources for infrastructure and renewable energy.
Democratic primaries are being held today in North Carolina and Indiana. In a CBS News/New York Times poll, 70 percent of voters said candidates proposed the tax holiday for political reasons.
Meanwhile, Empro Products, a warehouse in Paterson that makes the numbers on gas price signs, is seeing a rise in interest in its number 4s — meaning gas stations are prepping for gas to reach $4 a gallon. The warehouse has also gotten phone calls for 5s.
