Kids encourage Red Bank to bag (ordinary) plastic

A kindergarten class at the Red Bank Charter School has come up with a slogan — “When you pack, use a sack” — to promote a proposed law that encourages reusable and recyclable shopping bags. From Red Bank Green:
The motto will appear on doorknob hangtags that borough children will distribute to every home and business in town during the week of May 19 to encourage the replacement of disposable bags with reusable ones.
The proposed bag law also makes it easier to trash or recycle bags — it requires businesses to offer containers for disposal (if they continue to offer run-of-the-mill plastic) and recycling (if they offer recyclable or compostable bags).
Red Bank’s environmental commission received a grant to buy up to 500 cloth shopping bags printed with the borough centennial logo, says the Asbury Park Press. The bags will be given free to residents who sign a pledge to reduce or eliminate their use of plastic bags, according to borough councilwoman Mary Grace Cangemi, who coauthored the bag ordinance with councilman Michael DuPont.
