A car when you need one

In some places, you can now get off the train and into a Zipcar.

NJ Transit has partnered with Zipcar to offer the rental cars at the Metropark, Montclair State University, Princeton Junction and Morristown rail stations and Liberty State Park light rail station. The move gives commuters more flexibility — some people may feasibly be able to get rid of a car and exist on mass transit and Zipcars alone. That is, if the program is continued — The Star-Ledger says the program is operating on a six-month trial basis starting this week.

To use Zipcars, become a member, then reserve a car online or by phone and go pick it up. Members can use the cars in and around the area — NJ Transit gives the example of hopping off a train in Princeton Junction and into a car to make a business meeting at Merrill Lynch 5 miles away. Rates appear to differ depending on geography and use, but an hour of personal use in Morristown costs $8 an hour and $60 a day, according to Zipcar.com. That includes gas, insurance, parking and 180 “free” miles.
