From wasteland to wetlands
Above: A gray day at Liberty State Park.
A 234-acre former dumping ground in the middle of Liberty State Park is to become an “urban wildlife refuge” with grasslands, hardwood forests, freshwater wetlands and a 40-acre saltwater marsh. The project could start in the next three to four months, a colonel with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said yesterday at a meeting at Liberty Science Center. To read more about the plans, see this story in today’s Star-Ledger.
This weekend, Liberty State Park will play host to the PSEG Global Green Expo.
Last weekend, it was the site of an Earth Day 5K run/walk and fair that didn’t seem terribly environmental at times — not only did my friend and I run around a slew of discarded plastic cups during the race, we were offered a mountain of Earth Day swag. (I would have enjoyed my Hudson Transportation Management Association mini-compass if it actually worked.)
