Farmers to rally in Trenton

More than 500 farmers, agricultural industry business people and their supporters are expected to rally in Trenton this morning starting at 10 a.m. to oppose Gov. Corzine’s plan to cut the state department of agriculture and shift its duties to other departments.

The rally, organized by the New Jersey Farm Bureau, will begin in front of the Statehouse with a parade of horses, tractors and landscaping equipment. It is expected to end at noon.

Update: 1,000 people turned out for the rally, according to the Bergen Record, whose reporter said West State Street resembled a John Deere dealership. Also via the Record: Speakers at the event said Corzine’s proposal would “doom community farmers’ markets, the Jersey Fresh produce program, 4-H, Future Farmers of America classes in 50 schools, ‘pick-your-own’ businesses and equine recreation” and result in other consequences.
