Master plan: N.J. may need another nuclear power plant

The state’s energy master plan says the state may need a new nuclear power plant, according to the Star-Ledger, which obtained a recent draft and says PSE&G is planning to build a new nuclear facility in Salem County. Look for more on nuclear energy in an upcoming post.

The master plan, which will likely come to a public hearing near you starting this summer, also stressed the importance of reducing the state’s energy consumption. The draft that will be released to the public isn’t yet finished, but this recent draft recommends (via the Ledger):

  • Revising building codes to make new construction 30 percent more energy efficient
  • Improving energy-efficiency standards for new appliances
  • Having the state government reduce energy use 25 percent by 2020 (Gov. Corzine is aiming for a 20 percent reduction statewide)
  • Retrofitting millions of buildings to make them more energy efficient
