Spring, and pollen, are in the air

It’s the first day of spring, the start of a new season in a particularly bad year for allergy sufferers.

From the Star-Ledger:

Spring officially arrives today and experts say allergy sufferers should brace themselves for a robust crop of pollen. A mild, wet, winter — last month was the wettest February in more than a century in northern New Jersey — has helped create the kind of ripe conditions allergy sufferers dread.

“My own prediction is that it will be worse than last year. The ground is very moist and quite saturated, which means it is well nourished for the trees,” said Leonard Bielory, director of the Asthma and Allergy Research Center at the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Newark.

Allergy shots have become more popular, say doctors in the Star-Ledger’s story.

About 35 million Americans have seasonal allergies, and in New Jersey, spring is typically the worst season for them.
