Morris County community mourns peacock

A wild white peacock that had become something of a town mascot was killed earlier this week by a motorist.

The bird — Max to some, George to others — had apparently lived at the intersection of Meriden and Lyonsville roads in Rockaway Township.

He was one of three who escaped from a local home in 2004, according to this story in the Daily Record.

While rare, feral peacocks can be found living in certain sections of the state, most notably at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton.
